FYI: Australian government bonds are very safe and highly liquid fixed-income investments. As of May 2016, two-year Australian government bonds were yielding 1.63%, while the five-year bonds were yielding 1.81%. Longer-term Australian government bonds, such as the 15-year bond, were yielding 2.52%. Investors wishing to gain heavy exposure to this asset class do not have many options. In terms of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), one option is the Vanguard Australian Government Bond Index ETF (VGB.AX), which allocates 100% of the fund to Australian bonds. Another option is the Aberdeen Asia-Pacific Income Fund, Inc. ETF (NYSE: FAX), which, as of March 31, 2016, allocated over a third of its portfolio to Australian bonds. However, as of May 2016, there was not a single U.S.-domiciled mutual fund that focused solely on Australian bonds. Thus, an investor looking for Australian bond exposure must invest in more broadly diversified international bond multi-funds.
