There's less here than meets the eye. The government filing by Soros represents changes which occurred during the first quarter of 2016. If I were him, I'd try to make these types of allocation changes early in a new quarter so as to have several months before having to disclose the changes publicly (to prevent front-running).
If these large stock sales took place in early January, might they have helped precipitate the really ugly equity market that began about than - and perhaps the strong rally in miners?
Note: The filing
doesn't tell us what Soros may have done during the second quarter, which began in April. Quite possibly he sold gold and moved back into equities. That, however, won't deter some from attempting to invest by the headline.
