Yield-chasing investors should have few regrets after the first quarter of 2016.
As the accompanying table shows, the Utilities Select Sector SPDR exchange-traded fund (ticker: XLU) has returned nearly 15% in 2016, by far the best sector performance over that stretch among the Select Sector SPDRs, which divide the stock universe into 11 sector categories.
The Select ETFs can serve as proxies for their sectors, though they don’t include every stock in a particular group, and tilt heavily toward large-company names.
