VIX-tracking exchange-traded funds have absorbed record amounts of cash, but they pose big risks for the uninitiated.

  • Another reason that one might avoid SVXY, UVXY, VIXM, and VIXY is that they issue schedule K-1s. There is a list of such ETPs at: http://etfdb.com/etf-tax-efficiency/etf-tax-tutorial-complete-list-of-etfs-that-issue-a-k-1/
  • All anybody can talk about w VXX is its almost total drop from the getgo, but it is possible to week-trade it, or month-trade it, if you're nervy and have some hunches about short-term market movement. He said (I ain't done it, yet). And willing to gamble and lose (you won't lose everything, but still). It is a gamble on US market direction pure and simple, but fun to watch, and presumably to trade with some judgment, swinging from high 20s to under 20 with some (ir)regularity.
