Ben Carlson: Smart Beta Crash Coming ?

Rob Arnott from Research Affiliates caused a bit of a stir in the fund world a few weeks ago when he called for a potential crash in smart beta funds. Here were the main takeaways from his recent research paper

  • Good article Ted, thanks for posting. I have two of the more basic smart beta funds, one with equal weight RHS and the other is PKW, which follows the Buyback Index of those repurchasing shares, not approving repurchases of 5% or more in a given year. Some of the smart beta funds get more complex in their structure, and may be flavor of the month, but these two are meant to be long term holds for me.
