This Top Sector ETF Is Nearing A Buy Point: What Makes It Good And Bad: XLU

FYI: Several of the largest sector and industry ETFs have been mauled by the bear recently.
Then there’s Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU), a defensively oriented exchange traded fund.

Think of it as your bear pepper spray for tough markets. It’s worth considering an overweight to utility companies, especially since the broad-market ETF such as SPDR S&P 500 (SPY) that you may already own only has a 3% stake in the sector.

XLU has gained 5.7% year to date through Feb. 17 vs. a 5.4% loss for SPY.
