Why Fund Ratings Could Be Misleading

FYI: How helpful are mutual-fund rankings from research firms such as Morningstar Inc. and S&P Capital IQ? New evidence suggests that for many investors, the answer may be “not very.”

  • Of course the rankings can be misleading, for a lot of reasons, not just the ones mentioned in the article. Rankings, by necessity, force funds into categories that are often inappropriate. But rankings are certainly good for the companies ranked highly, not to mention more publicity for the companies doing the ranking.
