The marketplace for closed-end funds is showing its age. CEFs, which date back to the 19th century, are the oldest fund type available to retail investors, and have always been prone to sweeping ebbs and flows of investor demand.
Now, with supply dwindling, demand may soon pick up. Last year, just eight CEFs made their debut, down from 11 in 2014 and 24 in 2013, according to Morningstar. Meanwhile, scores of CEFs have been shut, merged, or transformed out of existence, reducing their number to 561, down from 656 at the end of 2007, according to Morningstar. The number of exchange-traded funds, by contrast, exploded to 1656 from 608.
