    I definitely think that "smart grid" upgrades (and everything that sort of falls under that banner, renewable - etc) are certainly a necessity for the future, but it becomes the question of how best to invest in that. Brookfield does offer the spin-off Brookfield Renewable Power (http://brookfieldrenewable.com/Default.aspx), which has done well and is available on the pink sheets. Eric Sprott also offers Sprott Power, also on the pinks. Algonquin Power and Utilities is another Canadian one that would fall into renewable power, but it is volatile and thinly traded. All three, I believe, offer a dividend. Brookfield is the biggest of the three. GE and Honeywell may benefit from smart grid.
