Want to make your mutual fund manager squirm? Ask her to describe her conflicts of interest. Almost every fund has two masters, and yet we know from the biblical refrain that “no man can serve two masters.…Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” In this case, God would be mutual fund shareholders, while Mammon—the personification of greed—would be the fund management companies, which seek to collect as much in fees from fund shareholders as possible.
