ETF Market Vital Signs: Silent But Deadly

FYI: Stocks were trounced on Tuesday, with Volkswagen’s (VLKAY) emissions scandal weighing mightily on European stock exchange-traded funds. Look, I’m not going to make excuses for the price action. Honestly, there wasn’t much in the way of actual news driving these powerful moves. Traders were quiet.

Risky stuff sold off: The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB) fell 1.5%, same as the Nasdaq Composite. It’s been a see-saw for stocks ever since the market bottomed a month ago, on Aug. 24. Tuesday’s declines leaves the S&P 500 down 1.5% for the month and 5.6% on the year. Bigger picture, investors are reluctant to buy declines with the fervor of years’ past.

Regards,
Ted
