Rupal Bhansali began her investing education early, listening to her stockbroker father talk to his clients from his home office, which doubled as her childhood bedroom in Mumbai. “Contrarian investors are always guilty until proved innocent, because you are taking a stance the market doesn’t believe,” says the Ariel Investments money manager. “You must have fortitude and patience. I saw that firsthand.”
Bhansali has built on those early lessons in her nearly 20 years of managing money. As an analyst at Soros Fund Management, she learned to pay as much attention to the downside as the upside. She went on to manage international and global portfolios at Oppenheimer and Mackay Shields, where her MainStay International Equity fund (ticker: MSEAX) beat 99% of its peers in 2008.
