Closed-end bond funds feature tax-free payouts and high taxable yields. The big risk: rising interest rates.
The bond-market selloff that last week lifted Treasury yields to a high for this year also has depressed prices of closed-end bond funds, with many down 10% or more from their peaks in early 2015.
As a result, investors can get dividend yields of 6% or more on municipal closed-end funds and 8% to 9% on a variety of taxable bond funds. Closed-ends lately have littered the list of stocks making new 52-week lows on the NYSE.
