FYI: A dour retail sales report for April underscored that the economy likely isn’t strong enough to support an interest-rate hike from the Federal Reserve this summer, which sank the dollar and boosted gold. Selling continued in the bond market, while stocks were moved little in the U.S. and Europe. Retail- and consumer-oriented ETFs such as the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) were notable laggards after shoppers’ poor showing.
