FYI: At first glance, Larry Auriana and Hans Utsch, co-managers of the Federated Kaufmann Large Cap fund, seem an odd couple.
The shorter Auriana, a gravelly-voiced son of East Harlem streets who favors understated Ferragamo ties, worked his way through Fordham. He bought his first stock in high school, when his mom took him to a broker at 15. Utsch, a tall man given to wearing brightly colored suspenders, is a product of Westchester schools and Amherst, with a Columbia M.B.A. He got his start with his father, who ran a currency brokerage and had learned the value of money pushing wheelbarrows of Deutsche marks during the Weimar hyperinflation in Germany.
