Paul Merriman: How To Double Your Target-Date Retirement Fund's Return In A Single Move
Not only are these types of funds lacking in the small cap arena but also in the international as well. International would also include emerging markets and frontier markets.
It does make sense to spice up these funds. Merriman's advice of 40% in small cap value seems on the high side for me. Maybe 20% in small caps and 20% international.
To add, I do not prefer target date funds but rather asset allocation funds with a fixed allocation. Just my personal preference.
