Jonathan Clements: Don’t Let Obama Proposals Sidetrack Financial Planning

FYI: The White House has issued a flurry of proposals since early 2014, many aimed at scaling back provisions that benefit those with higher incomes and greater wealth. At stake are some of the smartest financial strategies available, such as saving for college in 529 plans, bequeathing your Roth individual retirement account to your children and the file-and-suspend tactic used to maximize Social Security benefits.
Don’t panic. It seems unlikely we will see any such legislation passed in 2015 given the current political gridlock. More important, even if one or more of these proposals become law, you likely will find that your best move is to stick with what you have been doing.
Regards,
Ted
