FYI: ore stock mutual funds, which invest in both growth and value stocks, have been value funds' little sister for much of the past 15 years, trailing in performance. But core funds have caught up, thanks to a surge in their growth components in recent years.
The average core mutual fund would have turned an investment of $10,000 on Dec. 31, 1999, into $27,443 over the course of 15 years ended March 9 this year, according to Morningstar Inc. data. That's just behind value funds' $27,461 and way ahead of growth funds' $11,504.
The S&P 500, a proxy for the stock market, compounded the sum into $18,910.
