FYI: Long/short equity is the most classic alternative investment strategy. Alfred W. Jones is credited for developing the process of “hedging” long stock exposure by short-selling other stocks, thus reducing net equity exposure. Today’s long/short equity mutual funds typically have more exposure to the long side, but their short positions can mitigate losses during bear markets, and even generate additional excess returns for the portfolio – and that’s why long/short equity funds continue to be popular to this day.
Two new long/short equity funds that recently launched are the Meeder Spectrum Fund and the ACM Dynamic Opportunity Fund. The former launched on January 2, while the latter debuted two weeks later on January 16.
