ETF Market Vital Signs, Jan. 12; Falling Oil Sinks Stocks

FYI: U.S. stocks declined on Monday as oil continued its sharp decline.
Gold and bond prices rose, a tape that was strikingly similar to Friday’s. A pessimistic view from Goldman Sachs on oil prices sent the commodity to fresh six-year lows and raised fresh questions about fourth-quarter profits headed into earnings season. Says one trader from a big Wall Street desk: “The dearth of narrative-shifting developments, coupled w/very fragile investor sentiment, is making for a choppy and ‘chase-prone’ environment.” So much for that vacuum as earnings set in: Alcoa’s (AA) earnings just topped expectations, but delivered an earnings guidance some analysts consider weak.

Ted
