FYI: Football playoff teams this weekend can only hope to have as strong a fourth quarter as stock funds had.
With a solid 4.6% return in the three months through December, the average diversified U.S.-stock fund was able to grind out a 7.6% gain for 2014, according to data from Thomson Reuters Corp. ’s Lipper unit. While the year’s gain couldn’t compete with the 32.3% stock-fund rally of 2013, it was welcome after several short-term market routs and scares during the year.
