FYI: Equity-income mutual funds, which encompass dividend funds, have run ahead of the broad stock market in much of the past 15 years.
If you'd placed $10,000 in the average equity-income fund on Sept. 30, 1999, the investment would have climbed to $27,961 by Dec. 29 this year. If you'd instead decided to ride the S&P 500, you'd have $21,749, according to data from Morningstar Inc.
