Anyhow ... on a different board in a different era, such "way off topic" discussions were sometimes permitted (1) at moderator's sole disgretion and (2) for a very short, but unspecified, period of time (usually measured in hours or days).
So, canning the post is understandable (and probably wise).
At some point, perhaps David will issue a general statement as to when and if such diversions will be permitted. This might serve to demystify the apparent vaporization of some threads. ---
