FYI: Foreign stock mutual funds appear to have two minds, with funds that follow developed markets performing more in line with the U.S. stock market in the past 15 years, while emerging market stock funds have excelled.
A $10,000 investment in the average diversified emerging markets stock fund on Sept. 30, 1999, would have grown to $37,484 by Dec. 9 this year, according to Morningstar Inc. data. The same investment would have expanded to $17,391 in the MSCI EAFE index and $21,407 in the S&P 500, which is a proxy for the broad U.S. stock market.
