FYI: The quest for higher yields has put a spotlight on once-obscure vehicles called Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs). A distinctive business and tax structure has led these publicly traded partnerships to pay investors average yields of about 5 percent over the past 10 years, compared to the 2.4 percent average yield of the Barclays Aggregate Index during the same period.
