The Bear Market “Cure” Is Worse Than The Disease

FYI: One of the great ironies of investing is that attempts to outsmart the market, either by security selection (“stock picking”) or market timing usually produce results that are inferior to simply buying entire asset classes and sticking with them through thick and thin. In some cases, elaborate efforts to beat the market and avoid risk end up producing the very returns you were trying to avoid all along.
Case in point—money manager Dr. John Hussman. No one would debate his academic credentials or his well-researched views on stock market valuations and expected returns. Yet his perma-bear outlook has done more long-term harm to shareholders than any bear market in recent memory.
