Dow up moderately, Small-caps down significantly. Huh?
The Dow is a poor representative of the performance of the total US stock market, with only 30 stocks, especially over short time periods like one day. It actually does a pretty good job over long periods of time.
The Dow 30 is heavily weighted by its top constituents, which just happened to be up today in a down total US market.
But yes, there was a divergence, with the small caps down a lot more than the S&P 500, which was down a little. The valuation of small cap stocks is a lot higher than the large and mega-cap stocks.
Below are the top holdings of the Dow 30, with their weightings.
