FYI: While it's not always the best indicator of what's going to happen in the future, it can be helpful to look at what long-term trends in growth tell us about how the global economy has developed over time. Using a data set put together by the Maddison Project, we are able to see some interesting trends over the long arc of economic history and across countries. The chart below shows the per capita GDP for a variety of countries over time, experessed in 1990 dollars.
