Smart Beta: The Investing Buzzword That Won't And--Needn't---Die

FYI: t's hard to find an investing expert who likes the term "smart beta." It makes the Nobel Prize-winning economist William Sharpe "definitionally sick."

Yet those who want to banish the term find it's as fiercely persistent as Monthy Python's Rabbit of Caerbannog, a cute and formidable animal that's nearly impossible to kill.
Regards,
Ted

Ted: Thanks for post. At end of article the author (Eric Balchunas) says something that I think is very wise and puts it all into perspective:

"Smart" is a marketing term like many others: Growth funds don't always grow, and value stocks aren't always a good value.
  • I look beyond the label created by the marketing department and like the product for a portion of my indexing portfolio

@ibartman Yeah, it's like that one Supreme Court decision re. pornography: you can't really define it but--- darn it--- you just know it went ya see it.
@Ted Of course, if you can't really define it, you better hope that's not one of the 3 questions at The Bridge .... or it's off into the bottomless gorge you will be flung.;)
