Accessing Pimco's Alpha Via ETF

FYI: After launching the actively managed Pimco Total Return ETF (BOND | B)—an ETF version of Pimco’s flagship Total Return Fund (PTTRX)—in February 2012, Pimco is looking to strike it big again in ETFs. BOND was the second-most-successful ETF launch in the 21-year history of ETFs, gathering its first $1 billion in less than three months.

  • I like the RAFI strategies (as a portion of my index ETF portfolios), but if I understand it correctly, the fixed income portion of the PXTIX strategy is dependent on Gross & Co's calls on interest rates, which, as far as I can tell, are either very right or very wrong. Any other opinions?

PIMCO and Gross bashing not required
  • No one has made money holding BOND for well over a year, which is not the case with PDI and PONDX, to compare different fruits.
  • I'm looking to understand the tax implications of the new ETF (USFI). The tax impact of PXTIX would be punishing in a taxable account.
