requesting comments on sgrox wells fargo advantage growth

edited October 2011 in Fund Discussions
I'm considering opening a new position in Wells Fargo Advantage Growth SGROX. This fund would be used to partially rebalance a mutual fund portfolio which is now exclusively value funds (Yacktman YACKX, FPA Crescent FPACX, Aston River Road Independant Value ARIVX). I am looking for some growth exposure but want an established fund with some track record of both fund and manager. I also want some semblance of downside risk aversion, more than a pure high beta aggressive fund. I also am aware of my lack of foreign/international/emerging markets exposure but do not wish to add this at this time. Please comment on this fund and any other well-performing established "conservative" domestic non-small cap growth funds I may use instead. Thanx.

  • Here are some no-load large cap growth funds recommended by M*: MCGFX, HACAX, JENSX, POGRX, PRWAX
  • SGROX's chart looks good. It has returned almost 10% over the last 5 years annualized, which compares favorably with the S&P500, which is less than 1% over that time. SGROX's management looks stable. The only downer is the expense ratio of 1.31% seems on the high side.
  • Looks like we all should have had some money parked in this fund, after the 2008 melt. Even with the about -40% in 2008, as randykevin noted; the 3, 5 and 10 year numbers are very decent. I can not recommend another similar fund in front of this one.
This link will indicate a very high rank in similar funds with the longer term numbers.

  • I saw the Wells Fargo Advantage Growth Fund from the Bloomberg article about Yacktman but didn't notice the no-load version. Would be ideal to DCA this fund.

Anyone know of a way to get SGROX's institutional class- SGRNX (expense ratio 0.80) for less than $5million, or the adminstrative class SGRKX (expense ratio 0.96) for less than $1million? Thanks.
  • Howdy amateur,

I presume you do not want to pay the 1.3% expense listed for SGROX, although the minimum investment is $2,500. We use Fidelity, so I can not speak to the other brokerage houses as to smaller minimums for the institutional or adm class shares; and will suspect that these may only be available at lower minimums when found as a choice within a 401k or similar plan, or as a direct acct holder with Wells Fargo.

    Take care,
