Trump says US will impose tariffs on overseas agricultural goods within weeks

Following is a current report from The Guardian:

US president claims his administration will introduce tariffs on farm products starting in April
Donald Trump has pledged to impose tariffs on overseas agricultural goods within weeks, as the White House mulls whether to make good on a threat to hit Canada and Mexico with steep duties from Tuesday.

The US president claimed his administration would introduce tariffs on farm products from 2 April.

A string of such deadlines – including vows to hit Canada and Mexico with tariffs in January, and then February – have been delayed, however, as economists and business urge caution.

“To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social network, on Monday. “Tariffs will go on external product on April 2nd. Have fun!”

On Tuesday, Trump has said the US will impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on China, on top of the 10% tariff it imposed on China last month.

These duties “will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled”, he declared last week, until the fentanyl crisis “stops, or is seriously limited”.

  • Will his ego force all these tariffs to go through? Feeling skeptical that any of these happen (other than maybe China's 10% add on), as Orange must be receiving constant pressure to give up on this terrible idea.

The markets aren't taking it too seriously. Worse case scenario seems to be that these tariffs are lifted just weeks after being instituted. Should be interesting to watch how he backpedals out of this.
  • Here is how gold is reacting. Lot of gold is being shifted from London to NYC ahead of possible tariffs that may also apply to the import of gold. London standard is 400 oz, but the US Comex standard is kilogram bars (kilo-bars; 32.151 troy oz), so some gold to be shipped to NYC has to be melted and cast into smaller kilo-bars.

  • Markets rolling over after he confirmed 25% on Canadian/Mexican stuff goes into effect tonight.

    So much winning!
  • Fentanyl? Canada? Almost zero comes from Canada. Illegal immigration? I recall a story from many months ago: A couple and their young child from India FROZE TO DEATH near the US border in Manitoba, after their coyote left them, abandoned them. Most of the year, southern Canada is not the stereotyped "Frozen North." It enrages me that there are people who are so cold and without a conscience; but.... look no further than the US FOTUS and his Veep. Canada has already beefed-up border security manpower and there are Blackhawks patrolling the frontier that were not doing so, before the Orange One started making all these threats.

Treas. Sec. Scott Bessent: "It would be a nice gesture if Canada and Mexico matched our tariffs on China." Hint, hint, hint. Jayzuz, these doinks possess no small measure of spleen.
  • I thought the days of such backward thinking died when those at the helm realized that the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 had been an unmitigated disaster. "The act increased tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods, including agricultural imports, by an average of 40%-60%." Never mind the loose use of "average." The fact is many millions wound up on the bread lines eating, one supposes, homegrown food.
  • Canada is imposing a 100% tariff on Teslas! We'll see if Europe joins in.
  • These tariffs are imposed on Mexico and Canada (allegedly) due to immigration and fentanyl.

So how can countries avoid tariffs due to immigration and fentanyl.? Per FOTUS, by "moving their companies to the USA."

That's like a patient asking their doctor how to cure their acne and being told the remedy is to cut off their big toe.

Talk about the biglyest of idiotic non-sequitors.
  • Well the genie is out of the bottle now!

Love the 100% tariff on Telsa idea. Go CANADA!!!
  • If the country does not want illegal immigrants, those immigrants will not show up. Same with Fentanyl. Those problems are inside the country. Of course, no one likes to admit when they are the source of the problem.

This is not about solving those problems but about funding tax cuts.
  • This country does want illegal immigrants - if they can pay them at 50% off, deny them any and all benefits and if they'll do the work no natural born citizen will do. Hell, they're crying for them as we speak. They also like rich ones apparently but mostly only from certain countries with the right colors and religious beliefs. Forget all that "bring me your tired and poor" nonsense we used to treasure. Our doors now are being watched by massive idiots and backwards values.

He's (they're) so dumb it's mind boggling. He puts tariffs on agriculture. Prices go up due to tariffs (screwed consumer) AND farmers can't sell as much because of retaliatory tariffs so..... they then give farmers billions of dollars in subsidies to replace what they can't sell costing the US consumer again (via taxes to give to farmers)!! So we get screwed twice.
  • One has to watch the “The Apprentice (the film released in 2024)” to better understand Trump as a businessman. It is quite chilling as it reveals Trump’s dealing in business. Now he applies them in politics.

It is very true American farmers will get screwed again as other countries can impose their tariffs on the vulnerable American products such as meats.
  • Tariffs are good. Tariffs are great.
    We should be tariffing Israel.
  • Just a couple of ideas from the internet

"Some might take solace in the fact that betting on sharp further losses in stocks forces one to assume that the government will deliberately commit economic suicide by pursuing farcical policies and there is certainly some truth to that (this is mostly our view), but a few things to keep in mind: 1) Trump doesn’t think his agenda is damaging; 2) unlike in Trump 1.0, there aren’t any “establishment” voices advocating for a change in direction (the prominent positions are filled with people reinforcing Trump’s instincts rather than blunting them); 3) it’s not clear where Trump’s pain threshold lies, and the “Trump Put” may be a lot lower than present levels (What would get the White House’s attention? Will it take a 10% pullback in stocks? A monthly jobs report showing a net loss in employment?); and 4) irreparable harm to confidence and growth could be inflicted before it dawns on anyone."

"The US' net international investment position is massively negative at north of 70% of GDP. There are a lot of US$ assets that can be sold. Bringing the money home also has the benefit of getting ahead of any US plans to start taxing foreign ownership of US assets. This is part of the Miran plan on rebalancing trade and the US announcement last week of the America First Investment Policy seems like a move in that direction.

As the Trump admin elevates the trade war with tariffs, perhaps the best defense the rest of the world has against him is simply selling their US assets, taking their ball and going home."

No one that I can read has a rational explanation for attacking our Northern neighbor, accusing it, falsely, of being a major Fentanyl supplier, and destroying the US auto industry which makes most of its parts in Mexico. Canadians are very very angry and are canceling all of their trade with us. It will be a long time before any of them vacation here again.

How will cutting 1/2 of the IRS workforce reduce the deficit? Eliminating NIH funding, and NSF employees will gut the US preeminence in science and Medicine. Agricultural trade groups know that the USDA reductions will allow a dramatic increase in agricultural pests and diseases. Forest service cuts reduce firefighting capacity.

The list goes on and on. The one common effect is the destruction of the world's confidence in America's reliability and willingness to partner with people and countries for our common good and economic prosperity.

Musk's main motivation seems to be destroying anything that forces him to follow regulations or pay taxes, and Trump's vindictiveness.
  • Well, if you wish to impute motivation of personally paying lower taxes (to Musk) and vindictiveness (to Trump), we can play that game all day long on these supposed 'investment boards' .

The Dems' motivation seems to oppose any action which secures national borders, and inhibit murderous Venezualans from deleting little American girls. So I impute America-hatred to Dems...

The Dems think that men should compete with women in women's sports. So I impute mysogyny to Dems.

We can impute motivations all day long.

And this is how our downward cycle starts.
